Nobody has watched you teach since the day you qualified.

That is not a criticism. It is how the trade works. You qualify, and then twenty years can pass with no feedback except a standards check every few years, with your registration riding on the result.

What I do

Development from someone still doing the job.

I train instructors, and I still teach learners every week. Not as a sideline — deliberately, because I cannot credibly tell you how to handle something if I have not handled it myself recently, in real traffic, with a real pupil.

That is the whole difference. Most instructor trainers stopped teaching years ago. When I tell you how a situation should have been managed, it is because I managed one like it on Tuesday.

The Standards Check Programme

A standards check is one lesson, watched by one examiner, with your registration attached to the result. Three failures and you are removed from the register. This is preparation that treats it seriously.

  • A written diagnostic completed before we meet, so the lesson itself is not spent on background
  • One observed lesson with a real pupil, recorded so you can review it afterwards
  • A written report scored against the seventeen competencies on the DVSA marking form
  • A one-hour debrief working through the report line by line
  • A written action plan, in priority order
  • A follow-up call in the week before your check

What it is not: a prediction. My assessment is not a DVSA assessment and carries no official standing. I will tell you honestly where I think you stand. The examiner's result is the only one that counts.

Monthly · twelve places

The Development Programme

£175 per month

Twelve months of having someone in your corner. For instructors who want to be genuinely good rather than merely compliant, and who have realised that waiting for the next standards check is not a development plan.

  • A monthly one-to-one session, forty-five minutes, in the car or online
  • A quarterly observed lesson with a written report, so progress is recorded rather than felt
  • Standards check preparation included when it falls due inside the year
  • Lesson plans, client-centred frameworks and debrief structures
  • Priority booking and a direct line for the things that cannot wait

Twelve places, because I am one person and every session is delivered by me.

Hourly

Part 1, 2 and 3, and ad‑hoc work

£75 per hour · block of 10 £700

Qualification training for PDIs, observed lessons, or a single session on one thing that is not working. No minimum commitment beyond the session itself.

  • Part 1, 2 and 3 preparation
  • Observed lessons with honest, specific feedback
  • One-off sessions on a particular competency or problem

I will also be honest with you about whether this career is what you think it is, before you spend money finding out.

Why me

If I am going to teach it, I should still be doing it.

I chair the Kettering and District Driving Instructors Association, which means the standard I am asked to hold other professionals to is the standard I hold my own learners to. Those two things are not separate.

You will get told the truth. If a lesson was strong, I will say so and tell you exactly what made it strong, because strengths are easy to lose while fixing something else. If it was not, you will hear that too, with the evidence, before an examiner finds it.
